It’s a countdown! When was the last time you watched these videos? And did you know that they all have one woman in common?
Up until a few years ago, music videos were imperative to the success of a single. From the styling and storyline to the direction and originality, if a video didn’t stand out, it could hinder the performance of a song. Few directors were more in demand for their masterful music video storytelling over the last 30+ years than Diane Martel, who sadly passed away last week at the age of 63. Her art and her legacy knew no bounds and she helped create some of the definitive music videos of the MTV and BET generation, something music historians and fans alike will forever be indebted to her for. Icons like Beyoncé, Alicia Keys and Ciara, all of whom worked with Martel, have paid tribute to her on various online platforms showing just how revered she was among artists.
