My Top 100 List of Horror/Halloween Movies
Horror/Halloween Movies by mood, occasion, and age group
Dear Squawkers,
One of the mailbag requests this month from Dana was for a Top 10 of my favorite horror movies, but I don’t have a top 10, I have a top 100. I wasn’t quite sure how to organize this, but Lainey had the great idea of treating it like programming a film festival, but everyone has such different tastes. So, I put together several menu options, depending on your particular preferred flavor of spooky. Also, I will denote specific years for films that have remakes/alternate language versions. Not all sequels and remakes are made equal.
The Traumatize My Children Young Halloween Film Festival
Ah, children. Some say Halloween is for them! If your kids are on the younger side, here is a family friendly festival program just for you.
Casper
Hocus Pocus
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Paranorman
The Addams Family and Addams Family Values – double feature
Monster Squad (1987)
Hubie Halloween or Goosebumps (2015) if you just can’t stand Adam Sandler’s schtick
If your kids are a little older, here’s a slightly more adventurous lineup.
Wendell & Wild
The Witches (1990)
Coraline
Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark
Beetlejuice
Ghostbusters
Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
Watch in order! I actually thought about this, and I think this is the ideal way to build up to the “scariest” movies on these lists. If your kid balks early on, abandon the effort for the year, they’re not ready for spooky season yet. We all get there in our own time.
