The Show Your Work of one film critic's nominations and voting process
Dear Squawkers,
I mentioned a few weeks ago the swag I get during awards season because I am a member of the Critics Choice Association and the Chicago Film Critics Association (congrats to Meghan on winning the Lessons In Chemistry bag + KitchenAid mixer!), and we vote on year-end awards.
This week, the CFCA will be announcing our year-end award winners on Tuesday night, and the next morning the CCA will be announcing the nominees for the Critics Choice Awards. So it seems like a good time to talk about nominating and voting on these awards, which is one of the weirder facets of being a film critic. I write film criticism because I’m a nerd who loves talking about movies; the fact that this contributes, even in a miniscule way, to someone winning a trophy on TV is bonkers. But I take it seriously, so here’s how I go about nominating people and films, and then voting on winners, because yes, it’s two different processes.
