Lainey: thanks for writing about Omid and explaining your relationship to him! As someone who read and enjoyed Endgame, I thought he did a great job breaking down the monarchy’s issues within the larger context of the media and society overall. I remain kind of bummed that the media (unsurprisingly but STILL) has ignored the real revelations of the book for the same three stories about the Sussexes. My opinion about the “royal racist(s) remain unchanged, all of them almost said terrible racist things, it serves no point to gossip about who said what at which particular time. They’re all racist, let us move on and discuss how Charles and William are briefing against each other all the time to the point where we can probably call it sabotage!
I really enjoy Omid Scobie's work, I miss his weekly Yahoo columns. Prince Harry made a point about pointing out things he got wrong in Finding Freedom, but he got a hell of a lot more right than anyone else covering the topic. His insight, and how he's connected so many different pieces of context together, to shape a narrative about the crisis the monarchy is facing - extremely well done and I think it's such a shame the focus has been entirely loss. But then, the British media and those who enable it are telling on themselves by the same things they want to keep obsessing over.
Love the story about Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's influence. These are the kind of celeb details I crave knowing more about. PLEASE tell me all about how nice and respectful people are, the good news bits about who is a mentor and how, tell me about the cake Tom Cruise sends people every year... there's definitely a correlation from that to people who excel at what they do, and what is more satisfying that seeing people be amazing at their jobs?
I also loved that story! It’s a reminder that 1) people can change, and 2) mentorship, in all industries, is important. Perhaps an important reminder for all of us that we might be modeling behaviors for our junior colleagues and peers, even when we don’t realize it.
I totally agree. While it can be petty fun finding out who the worst people in showbiz are, it's much more interesting to find out who the actual decent ones are!
I also love this story because it explains why, when I met RR during the Much Music Snow Job 2002 at Marble Mountain, NL he was such a DOUCHE. He dropped his bag right by my feet and when I tried to return it to him he snatched it from my hands and yelled “Don’t touch my STUFF”, and then walked away. I’m still so confused by my experience because he seems like a stand-up guy now.
Solidarity to you Jacek as I currently have a bidet wrapped for my husband and sitting under the Christmas tree. If he reacts with anything other than unbridled joy he’s getting divorced.
Also weird super niche question but did you need a plumber & an electrician to install it?
No it was pretty self contained! Just had to connect it to the water source. And thank you! I think it was a thoughtful attempt at a gift, however unconventional.
Also my husband is a Tottenham fan and I always think of you when he’s moaning about the team. I almost got him tickets to see man city / spurs at WHL in April but after their return to earth in November thought maybe the bidet was the safer choice...
They are SO badly short right now and with Maddison and Van de Ven out, they lost their two most impactful additions. I'm not surprised at the recent slide, but it's frustrating to see them jump ahead and then lose.
I think when my 50th rolls around we might have to do London in April for a late season game.
He’s so funny because he says he has “low expectations” given they are so young but then when they lay an egg he is so mad & frustrated. He’s also a big Tennessee fan and this is sort of par for the course for that school so I told him he should be used to it by now (he was not amused).
I love that idea for your birthday and think you should do it. We are huge sports fans and do a lot sport event attendance as trips for our travel and a Tottenham game is on our list. We have used a London based ticket concierge for previous events and it’s made the process a breeze.
Coming here to say Justice for Jacek. Bidets *are* amazing. Although maybe a little weird as a bday present? Christmas gift not weird, I don't make the rules.
See, and this lack of respect for my bidet gift is so disconnected by her reaction to all the amazing toilets in Japan which, by default, are all 100% bidet built-ins!
It was her 49th. Not a big number! Worth the risk.
I’m on your side. For our 15th wedding anniversary I bought two bidets and installed them myself. My husband was so happy and said it was the best present ever! I have family in Japan so we go regularly and that was the thing we missed the most when we got home. Great job Jacek!!!
I never actually convinced myself to use the bidet function on those toilets in Japan because I wasn't quite sure how much of my ass would need drying and whether or not I would do something incorrectly and spray shit all over a larger part of myself than I started with, but I did like the heated seats.
Maybe I should have tried it right before a shower....that would have been safe. Oh well. Reasons to return....
Agree Margaret! We redid our bathroom (like ourselves, by hand, it was a lot, worth it) and we have a wall mounted toilet now that has a heated seat and a built in bidet. I was unsure at first - I am SUPER squeamish. And now I cannot imagine how I ever lived any other way. My kids are going to need to pack bidets when they go to college.
Appreciate your ruling on Christmas presents Margaret!! Also the whole idea came from him losing his mind over our friends new house and the bidet that was installed so there is a basis to this gift. I’ll report back here on 12/25 10:05 CST as to his reaction and if he is on team Lainey or team jacek.
🤣🤣My BIL works for Kohler and installed mine from Tushy pretty easily. Touching pipes is not something I’m comfortable with! However, I did a test run after installation and water sprayed everywhere so I have literally never used it. Le sigh. I guess I will live vicariously through other bidet owners!
Jacek, I think it was a thoughtful gift and a great attempt at a homerun!
With the rapid backlash around the Person of the Year, and the ongoing discussion about Beyoncé and Angelica Jade Bastién‘s Vulture piece, it’s such an interesting time to be observing parasocial reactions to female celebrities. And as Lainey mentioned in today’s posts about Selena, Adele, and Taylor, some of this comes down to how each woman performs their identity, and how much they allow fan perceptions to feed into said performance. For example, as much of a “mastermind” as Taylor is, I don’t doubt that it was very strategic to both use the TIME interview to say that she doesn’t pay attention to her enemies AND to namedrop Kim and Scooter specifically, knowing exactly what her fans would do as a result. She almost gets to play both sides, occasionally dropping vague allusions to not harassing folks from her past when she re-releases albums, but also allowing her fans to fight over her and for her in increasingly vicious ways while portraying herself as a victim with no pushback from the journalist. I mean the sheer bloodlust for Reputation’s re-release is a great example of this - it would be her third re-release of this year alone, and they’re clamouring for the chance to give her more money and feed even deeper into her victory lap post-“cancellation.” Yet her fans both pacify and condescend to her while suggesting she is somehow all powerful and unimpeachable. It’s fascinating!
Thank you so much! Not to toot my own horn but I’ve also written about Taylor and the Swiftie fandom on my own newsletter, specifically about her simultaneous infantilization / deification in the world at large, definitely inspired by Lainey’s own great reporting on the topic: https://raquelalvarado.substack.com/p/37-anatomy-of-a-swift-fall
Also highly recommend reading the novel The Princess Bride, as well as William Goldman's memoir that talks about the writing of it, as well as some of the production (the way he lost it over the fire swamp fires while also knowing that he wrote both the book and the screenplay gets me every time, just absolute gold).
Re Leo, I actually buy that his support of Lily is genuine, partly because, as Sarah points out, his respect and affection for Kate Winslet feels very genuine. I think Leo is like a lot of men, especially in Hollywood, who are perfectly capable of respecting women as colleagues and friends and then having...slightly different approaches in the women they’re attracted to in their romantic lives.
Thanks, Lainey! And if you do talk to Omid soon, please tell him there are lots of us who deeply appreciate his work and stand with him against the Daily Mails of the world.
The Hugh Jackman influence on Ryan Reynolds is one of my favorite Hollywood stories. May all the douchebag white men we know meet a mentor who can call them on their shit and help them envision new possibilities.
It makes so much sense that Lainey and Omid are friends!!! In the best way - Omid has been almost like air to a drowning person watching those reporters attack Meghan Markle.
And they are both on point in writing and in sleuthing. I’m so into this revelation!
This is very shallow but can we talk about how young Omid Scobie looks??! He looks like he is in his 20s! What is his skin care routine?!? What face masks does he use? 🤣
Also I am currently reading Endgame. It is really well written. Bravo.
"just friends" was filmed in Regina (my home town) and I even saw RR in the airport... obviously my sister and I were agawk as young teens on the prairies haha. I think we saw him get in a limo but no picture opportunity. That was long enough ago that Katie Holmes was dating Chris Klein and RR was engaged to Alanis...and I love Amy Smart!
Oh my god, Rhys Darby is SUCH a gem in Our Flag Means Death - so incredibly charming, bang on with the Cary Elwes comparison. (Side note I watched an episode of Midsomer Murders last night and who should show up but Izzy Hands - I didn’t recognize his face right away but his voice is so distinctive.)
Con O'Neil's voice is so distinctive, and yet somehow, he still manages to totally disappear into his characters. He's in The Batman, and I only clocked it after season 2 of OFMD.
Lainey and Sarah, thank you so much, I am going to try all your recommendations! I’ve weirdly been putting off Goblin because it sounds so VERY good I want to have an uninterrupted space of time and clear head-space to enjoy it properly. Does that make sense? I think it might be my post-Christmas treat.
I got halfway through Who Rules the World, then bailed when it got bogged down in palace intrigue. Even though I normally love palace intrigue, this just wasn’t doing it for me, but I really should finish it off as I loved the characters. Vincenzo has been on my list for a while so that’s another one I’ll accelerate. And Miss S sounds right up my alley!
I am extremely grateful for all the recos and will be sure to report back 😊
I avoided Goblin for a long time because hilariously in retrospect I didn't think Gong Yoo was hot enough. And then...when you watch it... it's WILD. What he does with that character is so fucking sexy. And funny. And then I understood the thirst.
Hey @hunchieflower, I've been down that rabbit hole too, and definitely gonna check out all of the recommendations here I haven't seen yet. I'm currently watching My Demon on Netflix - it's coming out weekly, ep 5 just dropped today, but so far it's a super fun romance and the male lead (Song Kang) is hodang beautiful. Highly recommend :)
I was so badly hooked on Perfect Marriage Revenge that waiting for the last episodes to drop was like torture, which made me decide not to start My Demon until there were a few more episodes up … but after reading your recommendation I don’t think I can wait any longer!
I'm with you. My Demon is my shit. I KNOW i'm going to be obsessed with it, so i'm waiting. It'll be my Christmas gift to myself. Song Kang was SO hot in Nevertheless. Not a great drama but ... like... so much skinship by their standards!
Ohhh yeah that’s so fair. I did not realize it wasn’t fully out until the end of episode 1 and I was super annoyed, but already completely sucked in lol. They’re releasing two a week though! Ahaha
I'm one of those weirdos who doesn't really like sheet masks - they feel slightly claustrophobic to me, which is the opposite of relaxing. But mud/clay and cream masks are my jam!
I also do not like sheet masks, my skin is incredibly sensitive and many don't work for me. Also, am I the only one that hates the feeling of them sitting on your face and being gooey? What I do gift people is sunscreen from J and K beauty brands (far and away better than most US brands + much cheaper). Everyone needs it and if it works on my skin it will probably work for anyone.
@Sam, could you please share your favorite/recommended J and K sunscreens?
I recently tried the Trader Joe facial sunscreen after hearing/reading much fanfare for it, and I could *not* get past the texture (advertises itself as oil-free I believe, but it straight up *felt* like mineral oil, and I could not bear to put that on my face!). YMMV of course, and perhaps I ended up with a bad batch? I have no idea, but I sadly don't understand why it's a favorite at all, and would be happy to hear other recommendations.
With pleasure! My favorite is SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Heal-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum (it has a blue lid) I've used it for over a year I think and got my sisters hooked and it's usually $10 or less. I recently tried the SKIN1004 tone brightening sunscreen (clear/white lid) and it has a tint and is harder to blend in, and I'm as pale as the moon.
I also love the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics which I've used for like the last 4 years and I think is all over TikTok. Usually around $12.
I recently tried isntree (different from innisfree) Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel and like it so far, but haven't used it long. $15
These are all spf 50 PA++++ and don't really have any noticeable smell to them.
Before that I used Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence which I still think is fine but has a bit of an alcohol scent at first and I just like the others better.
I don't recommend the Candace Mermaid one, it made me breakout.
I get all these from stylevana or you can go through yesstyle b/c they are like official retailers vs. amazon where you can't verify as well, but you have to spend more for free shipping so it might be worth it to try from amazon in case you don't like them? Stylevana sends free samples too (like sheet masks lol) usually but b/c it's coming from far away sometimes it takes several weeks, has to go through customs and all that (I'm in TX).
...this was probably WAY more than you wanted to know, but I don't like when people aren't specific and I am a pale acne-prone girly so I have opinions on sunscreen.
Also vouching for SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Heal-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum!! I got it in the TikTok Shop and am in love!! It goes on like a dream, it just absorbs right in! No white cast and does not emit weird vapors that burn my eyes like all the US products seem to do. It leaves me feeling nice and fresh faced. :)
Thank you!!!!! And no, I definitely appreciate the additional information - my skin is oily/acne-prone, and skintone is maybe a light olive? I stayed away from the Mermaid one, thanks for the warning. We'll see how the tone-brightening one looks when it arrives, and I can't wait to try the other ones I ordered! Fingers crossed!

Maybe I should have tried it right before a shower....that would have been safe. Oh well. Reasons to return....
Sorry. I just realized I might have flipped your first and last name.
No worries. It’s the danger of having a (married) name like Kirsten!
This is the part of the gift I personally would have swooned over, the already installed when I got home part! Kudos!!
Agree Margaret! We redid our bathroom (like ourselves, by hand, it was a lot, worth it) and we have a wall mounted toilet now that has a heated seat and a built in bidet. Justice for Jacek! I want a toto washlet but we don't have the electrical setup.
Bidet toilet attachments are FANTASTIC, I will accept no other opinions.
Ash, we need to hear about his reaction so we can compare/contrast with Lainey's. LOL
Trust me I will be reporting back as soon as the gift is opened and reacted to!!!
🤣🤣My BIL works for Kohler and installed mine from Tushy pretty easily. Touching pipes is not something I’m comfortable with! I mentioned this in the chat previously, but I hope Lainey knows she planted a Gladiator seed re: Taylor many months ago… https://www.laineygossip.com/taylor-swift-give-us-very-good-no-regret-gossip-appearance-at-travis-kelce-kansas-city-chiefs-game/74832

I agree with everything about The Princess Bride, and I also think how insanely, perfectly beautiful the two leads are is also part of it.
Also highly recommend reading the novel The Princess Bride, as well as William Goldman's memoir that talks about the writing of it, as well as some of the production (the way he lost it over the fire swamp fires while also knowing that he wrote both the book and the screenplay gets me every time, just absolute gold).
The Princess Bride is the perfect movie 😍 couldn't agree more! And thanks to the person who submitted that question, so interesting

FYI - I'd order from Jolse, they are always running some kind of sale and are MUCH cheaper than Amazon.
Thank you for this heads up on Jolse. I just ordered a big old cartload from there and feel like a boss!
You’re welcome! I hope they work for you!
I bought the ‘cumshot’ serum Lainey used years ago, and it saved my skin. Now i may just throw these masks into my shopping cart too💪
😂 oh my God I forgot all about the cum shot serum🤣
Fxn great🤣
I don't know what this is, but now I need to have context. LOL
