honestly, I'll defend Björk's swan dress forever. How many other looks from two decades ago stick in the mind like that? And laying an egg on the red carpet? Glorious
I also loved the Björk's swan dress. It is the only one I remember from that night without having to google. And I think it brought some fun to the red carpet that sometimes gets overly serious
Thanks for the answer, Sarah, and “boring” business stuff was exactly what I was hoping you could share! I am not happy we can’t accurately dunk on Johnny Depp over this, of course, but I had a feeling the headlines weren’t telling the whole story…
The question about makeup/hair on Shogun reminded me that I spent my Hulu commercial breaks frantically googling to try to figure out what lip products they were using. This is also my question with every K drama I’ve seen! I’m sure the answer is some superior lip stain that can only be bought in Korea or Japan but I’ve tried nothing in the US so far that comes close.
It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me. I wanted to see Blake Lively at the Met. I wanted her to show up with the hair and energy and bracelet collection she had at the Super Bowl lol.
Haha I’ve never been a huge fan of Blake’s style but I appreciate that she never goes halfway! Her styling for the press run of A Simple Favor is an all time favorite for me. I loved the menswear tailoring and deliberate campiness. I saw that Statue of Liberty gown posted above in person last summer at an exhibit in London and it was spectacular in person, like a true work of art.
Thank you for diving into my question and sharing the article about the makeup and design on Shogun—can’t wait to read! Had not considered lighting or slashed budgets, but that makes total sense.
I wonder how much of Lana del Rey’s disastrous SNL performance early in her career cemented some of how people feel about her now. Because that performance was universally panned at the time, and while some retrospective views have softened the hatred, I find a lot of the discourse around her is similar to what people said then- and for most people, that performance was their first introduction to Lana.
I remember someone touting Lana as the best, and then I heard her sing and it wasn't my lane. Then I read something about her because it was in my purview... made me understand how she became the best for some people. Solidified my stance. I might check out her writing and see if I get it. Gaga has such a powerful voice that lyrics might get by me. Maybe Lana has more to say. Sorry, that's not to any of your points.
She’s not known for her stunning live vocal…sometimes she even skips whole lines of lyrics! Like she looks bored mid song. But she’s interesting to watch on stage. And her music is broody with (sometimes) intelligent lyrics.
That was my first introduction to her and those performances were so incredibly awful that even after all this time I cannot take her seriously. It wasn't just her vocals (which were bad enough)- the music was dragging along so slowly; like it was being played at half the speed. Her stage movements were lifeless and her eyes were dead. And the fact she didn't change up anything for her second performance just highlighted how bad it all was.
Thanks for answering my question! Lainey and Sarah are both so right about Celine and Cher Oscar outfits. They are excellent when you look at them now! Am I miss-remembering that putting the jacket backwards was Celine’s own idea?
Lighting darker skin improperly has become my peeve. Especially, when there's black and white photos of a variety of dark skinned people from decades ago lit well and glowing. The Neighborhood has some issues. Cedric and Sheaun McKinney are never lit properly. Either can look grey and never brown. The Wonder Years (still annoyed about the cancellation) was mostly a well lit show. I don't understand who makes these choices, but the episodes with Black directors (i.e. Matthew A. Cherry) all had good lighting. Mindy also took control with her show and her skin looked good. Andrea Risenborough had very bad makeup in the first episodes of Alice & Jack. It was distracting. Almost made mime-ish. Hallmark is not great for hair, but UK TV seems to have no interest in hiring hair stylists that can handle textures that are not straight. This far into TV years and they're still so terrible.
Met Gala commentating from Vogue was new for me. Essence usually has my attention, and then scrolling through the players completes the story. Lala did a good job. Bilingual and an MTV TRL veteran, she kept the conversation personable. She's friends with the family that not many of us have good thoughts about, AND Kelly Rowland. Talking to Dana Owens like it was an everyday thing. Skill.
Learning that a movie was meant for a blink and you missed it moment is new information. Glad to add to my growing trove from this blog.
Would love to see straight video feed with multiple angles of the Met red carpet and live play-by-play from fashion/culture people. Not like snarky E! Joan Rivers and Guiliana type commentary but a mix of insight into their looks, and hot mic audio from the carpet speaking for itself.
I like a good play-by-play. I enjoyed LaLa because I have MTV TRL nostalgia love for her. Her switching to Spanish for Bad Bunny was perfect. She knows how to keep a conversation from dying. This was my first year watching the Vogue version. Essence is usually my check in because the interviews are specific. Keke would have been interesting with Joan Rivers. Two quick witted ladies.
I did not realize that LaLa was on TRL! I didn’t watch it in college and see that’s when she was on it. I thought she came up when she was with Carmelo and on a reality show — realizing now that she was hustling long before she met that scrub!
And your mention of “The family” that shall not be named made me cackle 🤣
Making a name from someone else's work doesn't make them worth discussing outside of being a peripheral character to central figures (i.e. talent). Sure, help sell jam, but keep it moving. Prison work still happening? Did we pass the rest of the Bar? Do we even plant trees? Feed hungry children? There's nothing to name at this point using nice words.
I must be the only nerd that enjoys red carpet interviews!! Not that I expect anything insightful, I just like the off the cuff feel of it. And to see what they say about their outfits. Speaking of LDR that was my favourite moment, when she was interviewed by Lala with Kim K. Lana’s whole “I have my family too!!” in comparison to Kim’s mention of her own family, was a riot. So innocent and pure but also strategic and telling. LDR is a lot of contradictions in one person, she’s complex in the way that only a woman can be, and it’s captured in her music. That’s why I love her, personally, even in her Blue Jeans era
I just wanted to say: I subscribed only recently but I love the weekly mailbag. You teach us so much and give us plenty to think about.
Your fellow Squawkers are glad you're here, and that includes me. 💜

For Shogun they created their own lipstick colors, to accurately reflect what would have been available to women in 17th century Japan.

Can we have a squawk about one of the RM posts!?!

That line sent me! Best part of the night lol.
