It gets a little sticky gossiping about John Mulaney because we have some friends in common. But I will say he was an addict who relapsed and they got divorced and it doesn't have to be more complicated than that. But if you want it to be more complicated than that, things were not going well long before he relapsed, which is not blaming the relapse on her or their relationship, but their relationship just wasn't what he made it seem to be in his comedy.

I'll also add that I take everything his friends say about her with a grain of salt because they never liked her. But there was enough discussion about what was going on with them that by the time the divorce became public, no one was surprised except for her (and she probably wasn't surprised behind the scenes).

Honestly, my current favourite celeb couple is probably Paul Scheer and June Diane Raphael. They make none of the sense and yet perfect sense with how perfectly mismatched they are. His story of proposing to her in his memoir is hilarious.

I saw HDTGM live in Philly a few years ago and agree that Paul and June are incredible and I would be so sad if they ever broke up. Also, I want to marry Jason Mantzoukas

Yes!!! Paul’s memoir was so so good and adore those two. Individually and together!

I don’t know anyone else who has read his book and wanted to talk with someone about his coming of age story at the sex show place in Times Square. I almost punctured my appendix laughing so hard.

Paul Scheer's memoir is GREAT. I, too, hope he writes more.

Oh man, that book swung so hard from hysterical to harrowing. I would love Scheer to write more because he's got the knack for that kind of storytelling, and I also just want to know more stories about him and June.

I saw them live at the HDTGM UK tour this year and it was amazing. Also, their kids were the pre-show hype-man and they were adorable. One of them told us we weren't allowed to take and bad photos of his mum.

There are no bad photos of jdr 😍

Oooo adding this to my list. Love a good memoir!

Agree with you about his book being both hilarious and absolutely devastating. He is such a good writer, and the stories he has, I can imagine he can fill several more books. And I also want to know everything about him and June Diane!!!

Their hype kids, omg, I bet those boys are so cool.

Apologizing in advance and I'm going straight to hell, but this reads soooo Trumpy to me 😅:

“My magazine, my Martha Stewart magazine, which you might say is traditional, was the most modern home magazine ever created. We had avant-garde photography. Nobody ever showed puff pastry the way I showed it."

Now that you say that I can only hear it with his pronunciation

As a big fan of The Americans, my absolute fave celeb couple is Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. They're both so fucking cool, and I love their chemistry and how down-to-earth (almost normal) they seem.

I'm also super invested in the success of H+M - but mainly because I'm British and I honestly don't think I could take how smug and gleeful the media (and, to be honest, a significant proportion of the public) would be if they broke up.

I have heard recent rumors Keri and Rhys are on the outs....

Ack! No! I really appreciated what she shared about their relationship in her recent article in VF/THR (get them mixed up), how he needed to step up for her to take this job and he did.

I also loved his comments about her. I’d be so sad if they couldn’t make it work.

Mine is Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig. Oh and Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale. I like the low key yet smoldering couples.

“If that is indeed the plan, then staying quiet now is the right move. Something tells me that when and if Meghan is ready to move ahead, the strategy might be … a little more creative than what we’ve seen from the Sussexes in a while. Put a pin in that and remind me to elaborate later. “

that sounds like an inside scoop that we need to waaaait for before getting the details.

I love that they are staying quiet. And love the idea of them getting more creative

Lainey, I remember Sam and Aaron Taylor-Johnson were also your “obsession”, but note they’re not on the list. Maybe I missed an article, but I don’t think you’ve written about them in a while. That said, I definitely look at the situation differently with more adult eyes.

I will die on the hill that she was grooming him and that their entire relationship is very sus

“If something ever happened to Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, someone would have to carry me to bed, and I’d say there for a week.”

Same. This is the only celebrity couple I feel safe in believing in, and they are so cute together, so I would be crushed if it ended.

Tom and Zendaya are young , but they were broken up for over a year, and that was a good thing. They seemed to have realized that what they had was worth fighting for. So they have been together over 6 years total now and everyone around them loves them together.

I watched the Martha doc and loved every minute of it. The classical music was a little chintzy, but it definitely fit the grandiose vibe of her work and her estate. At one point, I tried to imagine hip hop used while scenes of Martha in Laura Ashley doily shirts fluffing up hydrangeas and whatnot flashed on the screen, and I just could not.

I won't spoil the best parts of the doc for those who haven't watched, but Martha does talk at length about her difficult and temperamental father and how he'd stand behind her and her siblings as they worked in his gardens and berate them intensely. The perfectionism was ingrained early and in a very sad way. There's a scene towards the end of the doc where a stressed-out Martha essentially does the same thing to some of her staff (it was filmed shortly before her prison sentence) and it's just a reminder that we're all capable of inflicting the trauma we experienced as kids on others, wheeee.

I imagine that she did hate it, because it portrays her as a pretty vulnerable person, and no one with a gigantic ego digs that. It was fascinating to watch her strive to sit upright and try to maintain a reserved and haughty demeanor while answering certain questions, because it's obvious when she falters and clams up due to emotion. Her decades-old divorce seems to be a far more palpable source of humiliation for her than her more recent prison stint, which I found fascinating.

Re. couples: I just have to say that Andy Samberg and Joanna Newsome have my fave celebrity home. It looks like it's probably haunted by poltergeists, but it's a dream. I could deal with objects flung around my kitchen if I got to live in a place like this:

What a great reflection on the doc, thanks. I am cackling and screeching every few scenes, can not wait for a deep dive with Lainey. I keep wanting to send quotes to my friends, but there are just too many and they're too good.

I still do not understand Lainey’s obsession with Rihanna and ASAP Rocky. Just because he is outwardly nice to her? First and foremost, there is the felony assault case and it’s not like Rihanna has the best history picking men. Chris Brown, Drake, something was definitely off with that Saudi businessman. I dunno, I can’t understand the fawning. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Here’s another person invested in Tom and Zendaya! They are one of my fave celeb couples. I love how they openly appreciate each other and how he’s completely okay with having a girlfriend who’s the bigger heatscore, and also happens to be taller.

I’m one of the WaPo readers who canceled their subscription due to the non-endorsement. I’ve read that paper for years and held it in perhaps naively high regard because of the Pentagon Papers and Watergate. But here we are, and a letter to the editor won’t mean as much as speaking with your wallet.

The Martha doc was very good for 2/3rds of it and then RJ Cutler rushed the last 20 minutes, cramming 20 years of her post-prison life into that short time and in my opinion pinning her "comeback success" on her friendship with Snoop Dog, of all things. I know that they do a lot together and it made her a bit more relevant with the youths, but she has done much more than that in 20 years to get back some of the luster she lost with the trial and conviction. It was disappointing because I thought he did a good job in the beginning and middle showcasing all of the ways men tried to take over or hold her back and how she overcame that through shear force of will. I won't ruin anything by giving specifics but it was so interesting to see how often men thought they needed her to do something in a different way to be successful and they were wrong every time.

The first celebrity couple I fangirled over was River Phoenix and Martha Plimpton, they were the coolest kids in Hollywood so of course they would get together.

For me it was River and Samantha Mathis. I love them in That Thing Called Love, I HAVE to find that movie somewhere as I'd rewatch it over and over.
