With Kate Middleton, isn't part of it also that she... doesn't really give us a lot else to talk about? her only opinions come out through the official palace channels, she can't really be out there displaying a lot of personality, be outspoken, do anything controversial or out of line with what's seen as fitting for her position. So style is really all that's left to talk about, and given the above, that's why it's such a crucial part of her work.

Re: Drew, I know someone who was her assistant years ago, and he described her as sweet but totally clueless about inconveniencing or imposing on other people. He gave an example of them being at an NYC airport waiting to board a flight to LA, pre 9/11: they were very late, but she was calmly browsing a Hudson News or something, while he kept telling her they needed to go. She told him everything would be ok. And when they got on the plane, people felt so charmed and excited to see her that any annoyance they felt at waiting disappeared. She might have ordered drinks for her section or even the whole plane, I can't remember. But at least then, she was very able to go through daily life being given a pass and happy indulgence from most everyone (maybe all celebrities are, I don't know).

When we were first covering that story I got an email from somebody who works on her show who basically said the same thing. She's very sweet and well-meaning, but they couldn't really get her to understand the implications of going ahead without writers during the strike.

Hmm, that’s really interesting. I feel like going through life as a sort of charming puppy (with both the cuteness and messy inconvenience this entails) is usually the realm of white men, so it’s interesting to see it working for a white woman.

Is it really just for white men? As someone who's non-white, I see it happen for both genders and it tracks. I would totally expect her to behave like this and maybe it doesn't annoy me because it's just any other day. It's similar to pretty privilege, but works worldwide. I remember a white Aussie friend saying it flat out when we were walking the streets of a city in China. She knew she could do certain things because she's white. She was correct. White and from a famous family (I love Lionel, John and Ethel on screen)?? Absolutely she's doing this. Didn't Reese tell that officer, "Do you know who I am?" and she lived to produce and produce and produce? It's fine. It's not, but it's how it is. Drew is a likable privileged puppy. I'm glad she's likable.

I think it helps that she's retained the same floppy adorableness she's had since her Gertie days. But yeah, the feigned helplessness thing is usually the domain of white dudes.

I’m disappointed in her, but I already didn’t watch her show so it won’t change anything. Regarding your story, I feel like that makes so much sense for her. She comes from a famous family and starred in ET at a very young age. She has only ever known a life where people treat her that way, and I’m sure it helps that people give her a pass because she actually does seem sweet. I wouldn’t be surprised if the network leaned hard on her with guilt about crew not getting paid because they weren’t working. Still, there’s no excuse, and she made the ultimate decision.

Hi, as a Puerto Rican living in NYC....we are not immigrants. I know that this is a niggling point but we are FULL AMERICAN CITIZENS, we have the same passports and utilize American currency on Puerto Rico. As out island is currently embroiled in a major economic crisis (our land is being sold out from under us, our beaches are being illegally privatized) it's still pivotal that this distinction is made because there is also a privilege that we have when coming to the States. We do not have to undergo the process of obtaining citizenship that our other Latino brethren do and it's important to note that. Thanks.

The selective criticism of Lainey's posts re Kate's makeup and yet not remembering or acknowledging multiple analogous posts on Meghan says a lot... I'm not here to start any fights. One of the reasons I was committed to LG all these years is because she models and encourages self reflection and growth in areas where we may have implicit bias and blind spots. I think this situation is an opportunity for that reflection.

Also, why must Meaghan be criticized just because Kate is? I know a lot of people are on one ‘team’ or the other with those two but that question had some red flags for me too.

Expand full comment

Especially if you acknowledge that the "criticism" that each receive, in general and particularly from the broader British media/gossip commentators, are not in the same category.

Totally - one gets criticized for something that the other gets praised for. And the criticism almost always flows in one direction only.

Yup. That question had a dog whistle in it.

I for one, adore the style commentary. On Kate, on everyone. Lainey Gossip was the first place to solidify that style and fashion are a big part of celebrities showing their work. It gets them noticed and it's a part of their brand. I always wondered why Kate's makeup looked so off and it makes sense - she needs more glow and shimmer!! Also loving the "as seen on" fashion posts. Those are so, so good. Oh, and I finally got my act together and subscribed!!

I'm a couple of years older than Kate and a harsh ring of eyeliner like that is a makeup trend that I think a lot of Brits our age have stuck with since the late 1990s

Thanks for answering my question, Lainey! The Free Britney community has become incredibly toxic. I think that wanting to “free” her sadly became some people’s entertainment and now that the conservatorship is over they want to keep spreading conspiracy theories. I don’t really trust most of what I read there, but I knew there was some concern about Cade. It sounds like he is a nice guy and Britney can make her own decisions about who she spends time with. :)

At least telling Ginger was helpful, and she won't have a story to tell about how she asked someone and they let her look bad. Lainey was the hero in that story.

I've never liked J-Lo - ever - and I have to say that this Delola debacle has made me full-on disgusted with her. Every other week or so, another report emerges and we learn that alcohol is even worse for us than we previously thought. Not here to finger wag or give some teetotaling lecture, but it IS a poison. I mean, shit, just ask Ben Affleck!

Her skin care line is bombing, but at least it made sense. I don't like the woman, as I mentioned, but she IS undeniably radiant. But this isn't like telling us to smear olive oil on our faces. This is a woman hellbent on being - or appearing, at least - as healthy as possible, and I find it incredibly insulting that she's out hawking a product she'd never habitually drink herself, with a husband who's openly struggled with his own sobriety. Maybe it's because I grew up around drunks and I know the damage that alcohol can wreak, but I really do find it beyond the pale.

If one of those Wine Lady celebrities went down this path, I wouldn't even blink. But this is so hypofuckincritical. I feel the same way about Blake Lively and Betty Booze, BTW.

On a different note, Ginger was always my fave, and there's no way Geri (who looks AMAZING) didn't appreciate that makeup tip. I mean, she ASKED!

And congrats to Showrunner Duana! I can't wait to see what her brilliant head dreamt up.

I love how Lainey told Ginger the truthful answer. You can’t be a ‘yes man.’

Ending the work week catching up on all the gossip with you all is a lovely break from the heartbreak of the week. Lainey- I am so happy that you’ve gotten to the point in your career/life that you felt confident enough to be honest with Geri. I have zero doubt that she will never forget it. Amazing! And one more- can we just immediately find out an alternative-non-fast-fashion-but-non-million dollar version of Jodie’s overalls… they’re so dreamy. Wishing everyone as safe, peaceful and restorative weekend as possible…

It’s so annoying how when men acquire anything, they consider it a great business deal, no matter what it is, but when a woman does it, you think it tarnishes their brand🤦‍♀️ Let JLO make money for the hell of it.

Expand full comment

I generally agree with the sentiment but there is something to be said for celebrity brands lining up with their public personas. JLo is a confessed non-drinker, so why am I listening to her opinion on what alcoholic beverages are tasty?

I was actually surprised her skincare line isn't doing well because she IS known for having beautiful skin. That's a brand that made a lot of the sense for her yet it doesn't seem to have worked out.

Expand full comment

Oh I see what ur saying the alch thing. Tbh I’m really not surprised her makeup line isn’t doing well though. It probably has to do with how cringy inauthentic her newsletters are and how inauthentic her interviews are so now when JLO rolls anything out, people just see her lack of authenticity behind everything she “backs up.”

I wonder if that's the price of overreaching as a spokesperson. When it feels like you'll sell anything why should we buy everything?

Whenever I see a post about Kate on LG, I always sense some underlying hostility. I often wonder why we hate her and what hot gossip Lainey is keeping from us. Kudos to Christy for having the balls to ask even if the answer was not as satisfying.

Expand full comment

Don't you think it's mostly that Lainey is bored with Kate wasting her massive space in the public eye? Kate shows NO work. She worked so hard to be where she is and had no shame. At least, come with something interesting? Personally, I feel a way about Kate because of the things that came out about how she treated Meghan (plus the obvious style copying...yet, better is better so I'll take it). I would be happy to see her be interesting, but she doesn't have a record for it since 2011. She can improve her makeup. That's an easy fix. It's like Lainey is finding something that we can like...after it's updated.

Agreed. And even if she’s not supposed to share personal opinions, she and William have spoken publicly about being against racism, for instance — William even tweeted about it more than once — but they never made any public defense of Meghan when certain publications made racist comments or pushed racist stereotypes about her. Not looking to start a fight either, but this is a simple fact.

Why does Geri always (only?) wear white?? You'll notice this if you watch drive to survive 😁

Expand full comment

I think she’s said it’s because that makes getting dressed easier, since everything matches. But only someone who doesn’t have to worry about getting stains out of her whites can say that!

Expand full comment

Yes! Have this same question. I barely wear white ever because I seem to always get something on it...

Speaking of Drive to Survive, I didn’t really enjoy Christian Horner until I saw the episode with Geri. When he looks at her, it’s total heart eyes. He seems to absolutely adore her. If they were ever to break up (*knock on wood*), I would be so sad for them.
