This was TIFF 2012, at the premiere of The Place Beyond the Pines. Thinking of it today because I interviewed both Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper on that carpet. Bradley spoke French to me and … it is indeed as enjoyable to listen to in person as it is on YouTube. Also, up close, his eyes are ridiculous.
As for Ryan, he’s almost always fun on a carpet – you always get the vibe that he’s in on some inside joke, and he’s suppressing a laugh. And not a mocking laugh, either, unlike that asshole Jake Gyllenhaal who gave me his full prick energy to the same carpet at the same theatre a few years later.
What I remember most though about this night is that I ended up at the after-party where Ryan and Eva Mendes were unmistakably in love, even though at the time so many haters didn’t want to see it because they were still holding out for a Ryan and Rachel McAdams reboot.
Just yesterday Variety reported that Ryan will be submitted in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance in the Barbie movie. And Bradley will likely also be in contention for Maestro. So the stars of this film from this Squawkback could be headed to the Oscars in March. Back then could you ever imagine in a million years that Ryan Gosling might get an Oscar nomination for playing a Ken Doll?!
It was a trip finding these in my archive - and not a digital archive! These are scanned photos. Like I have the originals on photo paper!
Best Supporting Actor might be the most competitive acting category this year. RDJ, Gosling, Mark Ruffalo, Colman Domingo, Matt Damon, De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Jacob Elordi (two chances), Willem Dafoe (two chances), longer shots Charles Melton, Glenn Howerton, Dominic Sessa, and we still haven't gotten to some films floating with unconfirmed December dates. We will be TALKING about these guys!
