Just leaving a pinned note here in case you're not able to post chat replies. Substack is aware that there's an issue with posting chat comments in the app. Works fine on a computer via the website if you have access and want to leave a note.

"The world becomes bigger, and our parents get smaller and they transition from being our guardians to the ones we have to guard." Oh, how this resonates. And beautifully said too.

I love emojis, though I also get why they annoy people. I know that I'm an Old and I guess should be more restrained in my communication, but I just can't quit that whimsical shit. My faves/most oft-used are the clown face, the alien, and the heart-eyed cat.

Um, speaking of cats...this is off topic, but I really want to send a virtual fist bump and a high five to the great SARAH for her aside within the Argylle review re. poor Scottish Fold cats and her plea for everyone to adopt and not shop.

THANK YOU, Sarah!

You coming to the realization that your Ma thinks jacek could be easily catfished made me laugh out loud.

Now that we know Jacek is into Lori Harvey, we can try and be that woman swindler. Lol.

I also watched the greatest night in pop. It was so good! There was a room full of super talented people that all looked like they were meeting their classmates on the first day of high school. I swear it only worked because Lionel Richie poured all his charisma into making the FOMO real.

I watched it this week because it was mentioned here and it was fascinating. Lionel Richie was the MVP, for sure, but Bob Dylan spoke to my soul as the uncomfortable introvert who didn't know what the f*ck was going on or when he could flee from that massive room full of people.

Omg he was SO UNCOMFY the whole time! Well, until Stevie brilliantly opened him up. 🎹

I felt so bad for Bob Dylan, he looked so stressed. Michael Jackson didn’t look much better, he just avoided most of the stress by getting there first.

i watched it last night, so amazing and 😂 completely same - i was like i see you bob dylan. i am you

I wonder if TNT could benefit from the fact that “flaming out” is something 99% of professional athletes have to prepare for, and even the small percentage who manage to stay in the limelight after at the very least have to make a career change to do so. One would hope Travis is more mentally prepared for that shift than someone from another industry might be?

Expand full comment

I don't think Travis will wait to retire until it's too late. Like Jason, he'll make the choice to retire when it makes sense for him personally, and not because he's too broken to play anymore. With New Heights, they've already set themselves up as two people who can talk about the game both with an insider's perspective AND in a way that makes it interesting for both hardcore and occasional fans.

The emoji thing reminds me of the end of 'A Visit from the Goon Squad' by Jennifer Egan where the future generation just communicates via PowerPoint slides. Images and barely text. And our day to day language has become more sparse too, right? We abbreviate everything in text. TBH, IRL, YMMV, IIRC... the list goes on. I love language and I find its evolution so fascinating. I have a journalist friend who was bemoaning this so I sent her the meme of Rhett Butler telling Scarlet, "tbh bae idgaf" which cracks me up every time.

Re Tapbacks - the only one I hate and will not respond to is the “?” because it forces me to double text and basically respond to myself. If you have a question about what I’ve said you better ask it if you want an answer!

Expand full comment

The "?" is the most-used tapback in my work group chat because people will often text "I have tea" and the number of "?"'s is indicative of eager people are for you to spill.

About your parent(s) not understanding the stuff that you do for work--I cosign. My lovely Chinese mom has never understood my industry. And would all the time tell me not to work so hard, which lol, one, I don't work that hard, and two, would she be telling me that if I worked a regular corporate job?

Expand full comment

I worked in palliative care for many years and never told my Chinese mom. She knew I work in healthcare but I never told her with which population because I was afraid she would be overly superstitious about me working with people so close to death. I absolutely loved my job too.

And now I miss Eva Mendes. Her character in Hitch was a tiny glimpse of the levels of goofy she's capable of in earnest. Her IG is a salve. She's got Carol Burnett skill level. Gina Rodriguez is channeling Eva (to me) not just because they're both Latina, but also because they bring the room up. The same women who took issue with Eva, had aunt's taking issue with JLo, and their daughters had issues with Meghan. We won't get into how head covering became a thing in Louisiana in the before times. Maybe there should be a family intervention regarding unhinged behavior. Until then, I hope we get to talk about EXPATS and how Lulu Wang has me conflicted about patience (I've watched two, but I now I wish I'd waited to binge...or spaced the two out). Not encouraging spoilers (NO SPOILERS HERE), but sharing my enthusiasm.

An Eva Mendes tangent but I loved the clothing line she did with Ny& Co. I have sweaters from that line I still wear!

Eva& Ryan, Bey& Jay Z all have one thing in common.. they are all from the SAME GENERATION. And their generations seem to withstand any storm. They really did stick to their wedding vows: “through thick and thin.” TNT differs from this. I have some doubts TNT can withstand “Act 2’s” possible storm because they’re part of the younger generation who tends to lack an ability to overcome adversity. One bad fight, it’s done. One misinterpretation, it’s done, without an attempt to compromise, listen and come up with an action plan to prevent those mistakes from reoccurring. Older generations have this gift. They seem to overcome most fights as long as those strong love pillars were set. Younger gen’s seem to lack this ability to overcome adversity. Therefore, TNT may (unfortunately) fail 😔😶‍🌫️

It’s an interesting point! If you think of Taylor’s peers, Gigi, Sophie Turner, Zoe, Cara…all are either divorced, dating around, or engaged. They’re all in their 30s. I guess you have to give them a good 5-10 more years before we gauge how their relationships work out in the long run. Taylor is a leader so maybe she’ll set the tone!!

People are too soft nowadays. Most wont have a leg to stand on

The only exception to what I said about younger gen’s seems to be Justin Bieber & Hailey Bieber. Justin sticking around through Haileys healthscares, Hailey sticking around through Justin’s healthscares, both of then enduring the Selena rumours etc like they have build a strong love to endure all the storms, but thats rare for that generation

Thanks for answering my question, Lainey! I'm glad to hear you ma is making plans for the Lunar year. More red is easy. Add a red lippie. I used to wear this in the crayon but I know how much you love a matte. And I believe this is one of T-Swifts fave reds and is extra perfect for the year of the dragon because the shade is Dragon Girl! https://www.narscosmetics.ca/CA/powermatte-lip-pigment/999NAC0000053.html

I was staunchly anti-emoji for a long time until someone pointed out that they can soften what might read as harsh or humorless in text-only. But Lainey and Sarah have inspired me! I'm gonna try to eliminate emojis for a month.

My brother and I do the same thing! I love it because I'll be doubled over laughing with tears streaming down my face and my husband will ask what is so funny but when I try to explain it he looks at me like I'm crazy. He doesn't get our humour... I'm not sure anyone would, and it's my favourite thing about my relationship with my brother.
