Reactions to Matthew Perry, lured by the mess of Bravo, Swift-Kelce PR learning curve, 1989 and Taylor's Version, obsessing over Greta Lee, representation in cinema, and eat that fat!
I forgot to add that if you're making pasta, when the water reaches a boil remove a cup before you strain the pasta. Then, when you're mixing the pasta with the sauce, add in a little bit of the pasta water and it will help the sauce more evenly coat the pasta.
I learned this from blue apron and it really does make a huge difference! I also think those ingredient and recipe kits can be a great starting point for helping people learn to cook (I just wish there was loads less plastic in their packaging).
My 6-year-old, Freya, asked for Cheetos in her school lunch this morning. She saw me experimenting with eating Cheetos with chopsticks a few nights ago (I've decided I prefer getting the hard orange Cheetos crust on my fingers and scrapping it off with my teeth - TMI, I know). So she packed her little training chopsticks in her lunch bag so she could eat them the same way.
Thank you! I first pitched 'Naomi' and my husband replied, "Is that a name?" But he loved 'Freya', so it all worked out. But of course Naomi is a name, like what?
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to name drop in here, but on a recent trip to LA I had the opportunity to meet James Park while he was promoting his new book, Chili Crisp (which is great, AND he is a delight, I love him). The discussion was moderated by the also great Alyse Whitney, who has a book coming out in Spring '24 called Big Dip Energy. I thought you all should know about both because the name of the book is so great and because the recipes in it sound really good!
But really, if you're not following Jamesy you're missing out. ❤️
I prefer to follow recipes rather than innovate in the kitchen but I did come up with a pretty fantastic dip. I'd wanted to copy Trader Joe's artichoke spread but just throwing the jarred artichoke in oil I got from Costco didn't quite do it, so I threw in some kimchi, also from Costco, and voila, a really cool, almost healthy, almost vegetarian dip with a ton of umami.
Sometimes I even buy spicy mackerel and wrap it in roasted seaweed and call it a poor mans roll, but I’ve discovered not all brands are built the same.
The parasocial dynamics of mourning Matthew Perry are, indeed, very weird. OF COURSE asking the 5 remaining Friends to perform their grief is intrusive. At the same time, isn’t this what PR professionals are for? Is it hard for their teams to coordinate releasing a statement a publicist wrote? Which actor’s team takes the lead? Presumably they all have agencies on retainer; how complicated is it for the different teams to work together? I apologize if these questions are Too Soon; I’m just interested in the Show Your Work of it.
The families of famous people will often release statements announcing a death, or shortly after it has been announced. That being a not at all unfamiliar thing, I can see people expecting this from his most famous “work family.” That doesn’t make it any less odd or touchy or difficult... I kind of think it just underlines once again how utterly weird it is to be famous.
When Bob Saget passed away, there were people trolling John Stamos on socials because he hadn’t said anything, like actually attacking him for it and starting pernicious gossip that there was a falling out. And it just took him a few days to be able to do it.
I work in a PR related field and have been a spokesperson for people, and have worked with them to issue those types of statement. When it’s someone you love dearly, people often know exactly what want to say, they just can't find the words. And they are especially careful - when you know it’s going to be broadcast everywhere and repeated for at least the length of a news cycle - some become obsessive with what to say, what not to say, wanting it to be perfect and poignant and beautiful as a tribute to someone they loved and are in the frenzied first days of grieving, and they want it to be personalized in a way that a publicist may not be able to generate. Social media has increased the level of difficulty for a standard statement on these topics.
Thanks, JC. That’s exactly the kind of inside baseball I was wondering about. Personally I would want to hand any public facing statement off to someone else but obviously everyone grieves differently. And I can appreciate how hard it can be when the perfectionism sets in!
There is of course the other polar end - get something out, make it good and leave me alone because I can’t deal. I’ve dealt more with corporates where there is a generic standard as a base that you build from there, but individuals or those outside that corporate level thinking can tend to want more personal. Basically, everyone is different and as the comms/PR, you have to figure out the right approach for the client and situation - both to writing the statement, and the strategy of when to push for it or to back off, and then how to draft it.
My biggest question is how do non Canadians get ahold of this pepperocini picanti?!! Can someone smuggle it across the border along with reasonably priced insulin (this is a joke to any law officials reading)
I'm in the same boat, it's so strange! How they think mergers happen in public companies? BANANAS. It's like Suits-level amounts of inaccuracies and corporate fanfiction, but it thinks its a prestige drama! I love to hate it and will watch it. (Also Reese Witherspoon is a terrible casting choice for Bradley).
Grief is extremely personal and people need to process and live through their emotions, so asking the cast of Friends to share their grief is too much to ask. I'm sure in time they will, when they feel ready. They know the impact they have had and how important Chandler Bing is to so many. They'll share eventually, so let's give them space to figure out how to. Matthew Perry RIP, you are missed.
I have a question for the mailbag! How is Sasha doing? You gave us a wonderful Duana update, but no explanation for the disappearance of the Whats Your Drama podcast. I’m not a big podcast person but that was an exception - I miss it! Anyway please give Sasha our best ❤️
Also I am totally trying the feta-peperoncini piccanti spread! I recently fell in love with a cottage cheese-green onion-sriracha concoction c/o another dip queen, Amber Tamblyn. With pizza crust it’s 💯
The Michael Shannon Christmas Bigfoot Movie?? I didn’t really know about Michael Shannon before the shape of water (I know, I know). And I loved the shape of water, but he was SO terrifying, like I was ready to be asexual for life, that I spent a whole weekend watching all his interviews on YouTube to get the character out of my head and Shannon in. And he is so delightful.
The pepperoni picanti + feta is exactly up my alley. But I just went to order some from Terroni and the shipping was at least $60. I....I couldn’t do it. Once again, living in non-GTA Canada bites me in the ass.

Let's have those cake recipes please!!
Send me an email at Sarah@laineygossip.com. Those recipes are long and I'm not clogging up the comments section with a million steps.

Thank you for the cookie tip! Gonna make some this weekend and try it out

Freya!!! Great name.

Oooh he just showed up on my fyp last month and he is AMAZE!
Followed!
Name drop away Natalie!

Re: Greta, I also want to mention High Maintenance. She has a range.
She really does.
IIRC she was also in some episodes of New Girl. I always perk up whenever I see Greta on screen. Ahh S2 of Miracle Workers is so good!
she was! i'm just finishing a rewatch and she plays tran's granddaughter and nick's gf
Yes thank you! Did she wear beanie? I’m picturing her in a knit hat and long hair…
i don't remember a beanie but she did have long hair. she was probably in like 3-4 episodes as a side character. she's so gorgeous!
I would love to hear from everyone who tries the recipes!
I didn’t know I needed to know about a wet paper towel. Now that I know? I know better. Thank you, Lainey!
Tried this with leftover pasta and it worked so well! Great tip!
Sarah - what is a “Kominsky Method-level prank”???
I refuse to believe The Kominsky Method was a real show. Similarly, I don't think The Morning Show is a real show.
I can’t figure out why I dislike The Morning Show or what makes me watch it. Yet I continued.

It thinks it’s a prestige drama LOL.

I miss Sasha too!! That podcast was one of my faves.

It's called Pottersville, it's WILD.
Oooh I am in.

PC does a version with their black label brand - so if you have a well-stocked Loblaws or Superstore you might be in luck!
Thank you! I can get to a Superstore for sure.
